The news had hit her like a punch to the stomach. Each day since had been a blur of anxiety. The familiar creaks of the old building felt like a constant whisper of warning. She jumped at every unexpected sound. Her hands shook as she scrolled through Zillow.

She started taking longer showers, the hot water washing over her skin, but providing little relief. She just felt exhausted, as though she hadn't slept in weeks.
